Maitland Homestead

Homesteading

The Maitland family began to become ecologically minded in the mid 90's. As Greg worked more in the environmental field this mindfulness only grew and in 2013 led to a life lived exclusively off the grid. One of the most exciting things about living off-grid was the ability to derive energy exclusively from solar power. This drastically reduced any dependence on non-renewable energy sources and helps reduce air pollution. When he is not consulting Greg is happy to share details about off-grid living and adjusting to natural sources of energy at anytime!

The Orchard

One aspect of living off-grid is homesteading! A large part of homesteading is the ability to be completely self-sustained. This could not happen without the benefits found in the Orchard. Here, the Maitland's grow pears, peaches, apples, nuts, and more! Being able to grow your own food is not only empowering but it also allows you to naturally participate in soil restoration and understanding your own local environment.

Raising Goats

The Maitland homestead is home to a variety of various livestock and animals including goats, chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, rabbits, cats, and dogs and sometimes more.

Providing for these animals in turn provides for the family meat, cheese, milk, and eggs. Growing and producing your own food is not easy and has taken a lot of trial and error over the years. Reach out and share with us if you are a fellow homesteader, we'd love to hear your story!

Herbal Medicine

This may be the one thing that sets the Maitlands apart from even other homesteaders! Melissa Maitland is a clinical herbalist and specializes in recommending alternatives to modern medicine. Her motto is, "Traditional Medicine for Modern Times". Now, in addition to helping on the homestead, Melissa operates a local herb shop and dedicates her time to sharing her knowledge to help others better understand their own health.
